1, English novelist and poet
-he was an English novelist and poet
2, 2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928
-he was born in Bockhampton, which is a hamlet to the east of Dorchester in Dorset, England
3, Influence
-a Victorian realist, in the tradition of George Elliot, he was also influenced both in his novels and poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth
-he was also influenced by Charles Dickens
4, Rural society
-Hardy focused on a declining rural society


1, Family
-his father Thomas Worked as a stonemason and local builder
-his mother Jemima was well-read
2, Education
-at school he learned Latin and could do well academically, however, the family was not able to send him to university
-first he trained as an architect, later moved to London and studied at the King’s College
3, Architect
-he was successful architect
-won prizes from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Architectural Association
4. Wives
-he was married twice
-his first wife was Emma Lavinia Gifford, although they later became estranged
-her death in 1912 had a traumatic effect on him
-his second wife was Florence Emily Dugdale, who was 39 years his junior
